Dr. John Dolittle (E. Murphy) predan je otac, suprug i cijenjen liječnik u ordinaciji koju vodi sa svojim partnerom dr. Markom Wellerom (O. Platt). No, dr. Dolittle ne zna da pati od potisnutih sjećanja iz djetinjstva. Tada je, naime, bio uvjeren da može razgovarati sa životinjama. Kad jedne večeri doživi automobilsku nesreću pregazivši psa, sjećanja mu se vrate, te odjednom može čuti svaku životinju na koju naiđe. Pomisli da je lud i odluči otići na odmor sa suprugom Lisom (K. Wilson), ali sve je više životinja koje pokušavaju razgovarati s njim...Prihvativši, ipak, da je obdaren neobičnim moćima, dr. Dollitle postane veterinar kojemu počnu dolaziti sve životinje koje imaju zdravstvenih tegoba...
